Anna Marmodoro

In December Anna continued working on Stoic metaphysics, on which she gave an invited lectured at the Harvard Philosophy Department; in connection with her work in ancient metaphysics she also participated in the annual Princeton Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy. Additionally, she made progress on a new paper on fundamentality and grounding, and submitted another one on power ontology to a peer reviewed international journal. Her paper on "Dispositional modality vis-à-vis conditional necessity” in now in press in Philosophical Investigations.

In November Anna continued working on Stoics metaphysics and gave talks on related topics at the Universities of Columbia, Princeton, and Penn.

Naoya Iwata

In November Naoya continued working on power and definition in the Phaedrus and its relation to conditional analysis of dispositions. And he presented this paper in a work-in-progress seminar.

 

October

Anna Marmodoro

In October Anna gave this year’s invited lecture at the annual Boston Area in Ancient Philosophy Colloquium, held at Holy Cross College, in Worcester (MA). Her topic was “Composition and Constitution in Ancient Metaphysics”. She also presented new work on Stoic metaphysics at the Centre for Study of Greek and Roman Antiquity in Oxford and she will continue working on that topic with a view to prepare an article submission in due course. Additionally, Anna gave a talk on "Powers, Emergence and Ontology" at an international workshop on Causal Powers and Structural Realism in Lisbon. She was also a panel member at a conference in philosophy of religion in Verona (Italy).

Naoya Iwata

In October Naoya presented on Plato's recollection theory in the Phaedo in the ancient philosophy workshop at Oxford, and continued working on power and definition in the Phaedrus.

 

September

In September Anna convened in Oxford a conference on Essence Power and Activity, in collaboration with Philippe Hoffmann, and on that occasions served as commentator for David Sedley and Maria Michela Sassi. She also convened and taught at the summer school and conference on Power, Perception and Agency, in Rome, in collaboration with Erasmus Mayr. Additionally, during September Anna drafted a new research paper on Powers, Emergence and Ontology that she will present next month at a workshop in Lisbon on Causal Powers and Structural Realism.

In September, Tamer continued working on the metaphysics of the Stoics.

In September Naoya finished and submitted a review of Clitophon's Challenge by Hugh Benson to British Journal for the History of Philosophy. He also attended the summer school and conference on Power, Perception and Agency in Rome.

In August Anna gave a talk on Powers and Modality at the international coference Dispositions and Manifestations in Köln, and worked on a new paper on emergence and fundamentality.

In August, Tamer presented a paper on techne as a dunamis in Oxford and continued working on the metaphysics of the Stoics.

In August Naoya continued working on a review of Clitophon's Challenge by Hugh Benson and his paper on dialectic and the theory of power in Plato's Phaedrus.

Giannis Stamatellos

In August, Giannis' paper on "Virtue and Hexis in Plotinus" was published in The International Journal of the Platonic Tradition (9.2: 129–145, link).

 

July

Anna Marmodoro

In July Anna gave an invited research presentation at the international conference The Metapysics of Properties and Relations, in Bergamo (Italy); and one at the international summer school The Ontology of Fundamental Physics, in Saig (Germany), where she also contributed to the teaching. Anna's paper titled "Dispositional modality vis-à-vis conditional necessity" was accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Philosophical Investigations. With David Yates, Anna completed the final stages of the work for the publication of their edited volume on The Metaphysics of Relations; and with Irini Viltanioti she made progress in the preparation of their edited volume on Divine Powers in Late Antiquity.

Tamer Nawar

In July, Tamer presented on Sextus Empiricus at a workshop in Durham, contributed to proofreading and indexing the volume of the metaphysics of relations edited by Anna Marmodoro and David Yates, and continued working on the metaphysics of Alexander of Aphrodisias and also Aristotle.

Irini Viltanioti

In July, Irini continued proofreading and indexing her forthcoming monograph L'harmonie des Sirènes du pythagorisme ancien à Platon and also worked on the Divine Powers in Late Antiquity edited volume (coedited with Anna Marmodoro; under contract with Oxford University Press). In addition, Irini worked on her paper on Porphyry's De antro nympharum.

In June, Irini submitted her paper on cult statues in Porphyry of Tyre and Makarios Magnes to a journal. She also presented her paper on “Porphyry’s Real Powers” at the colloquium “Ritual Dynamics in Late Antiquity” (University of St Andrews, School of Classics). In addition, she revised her article on “Ἔρως δαßμων μÝγας : Diotime de Mantinée sur la nature d’Erôs” for publication. Furthermore, Irini continued proofreading her forthcoming monograph L’harmonie des Sirènes du pythagorisme ancien à Platon (http://www.degruyter.com/view/product/458010) and working on the Divine Powers in Late Antiquity edited volume (under contract with Oxford University Press).

Irini Viltanioti    

During May, Irini has mainly worked on her paper on “Porphyry’s Real Powers”. She has also prepared her article on cult statues in Porphyry of Tyre and Makarios Magnes for submission to a journal. Irini’s paper on “Porphyry’s Letter to Marcella: A Literary Attack against Christian Appropriation of Neo-Pythagorean Moral Wisdom?” was accepted for publication and is now forthcoming in Forms and Transfers of Pythagorean Knowledge: Religion – Askēsis – Science, edited by Almut-Barbara Renger & Alessandro Stavru (under contract with Harrassowitz, Wiesbaden). In addition, Irini continued working on the Divine Powers in Late Antiquity edited volume (under contract with Oxford University Press) as well as on the proposal of the Mind and Body in Late Antiquity edited volume, in collaboration with Dr Anna Marmodoro. Furthermore, Irini has been proofreading the manuscript of her forthcoming book L’harmonie des Sirènes du pythagorisme ancien à Platon (Berlin/Boston: Walter de Gruyter; series: Studia Praesocratica 7).

During April, Irini continued working on her paper on Porphyry's Commentary on the Timaeus as well as on the volume Divine Powers in Late Antiquity, which she is coediting with Dr Anna Marmodoro. In addition, Irini and Anna have started working on a second volume entitled A History of Body and Mind in Late Antiquity. In April, Irini taught as an invited lecturer at the University of Brussels (Université Libre de Bruxelles).

In March, Naoya continued working on Plato's discussion of powers in the Sophist and worked on the theory of power mentioned in the Phaedrus in conjunction with On Ancient Medicine. In addition, Naoya presented a paper on the causal role of Plato's Form of the Good in a conference at Kyoto University, Japan.

In February Anna’s paper on Aquinas on artefacts was accepted for publication in Vivarium, and her paper on Anaxagoras’ qualitative gunk was accepted for publication in the British Journal for the History of Philosophy.  Anna submitted a full draft of her manuscript Everything in Everything. An Essay on Anaxagoras’ Metaphysics to OUP’s consideration. Also, Anna submitted in collaboration with David Yates the final manuscript of their edited volume on The Metaphysics of Relations, to OUP.  Finally, Anna’s edited volume, in collaboration with Jonathan Hill, The Author’s Voice in Classical and Late Antiquity was reviewed in the Bryn Mawr Classical Review.

In February, continued working on Stoic and Epicurean metaphysics and also worked on the metaphysics of powers in Alexander of Aphrodisias.

 

Irini Viltanioti 

In February, Irini started working on a new paper provisionally entitled “Porphyry’s Real Powers in Proclus’ Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus.”  Her review of Sherman (D.) Soul, World and Idea. Anna Marmodoro

In January Anna gave two research presentations: the first was on "Plato’s teleological powers" at the annual meeting of the Italian Society for the Study of the History of Philosophy, of which she is an honorary member.  The second was on Anaxagoras's Power Gunk at the University on Konstanz (Germany). She has been working on the latter topic for a few months now, preparing a new monograph on Anaxagoras’s metaphysics.
 

Tamer Nawar

In January, Tamer completed a discussion article of J. Barnes, Proof, Knowledge, and Scepticism, and continued working on Stoic and Epicurean metaphysics and Sceptical arguments concerning causation.

 

Irini Viltanioti

In January, Irini worked on her paper on Porphyry's Commentary on the Timaeus. Her essays "Les Mystères ou l’expérience de la transformation” and "La source de la sagesse: Homère, Solon, Platon, Aristote et l’orphico-pythagorisme” (co-authored with B. Decharneux) are now published in the collective volume Le Livre des Egyptes. Savoirs et imaginaires, dir. Florence Quentin. Paris: Ed. Laffont.
