Recent  scholars  are  not  unanimous  in  their  hypotheses  concerning  the  identity  of  the  anonymous  Hellene  in  Makarios  Magnesí  Apokritikos.  Following  Richard Gouletís (2003,  135)  conclusion,  according  to  which  the  origin  of  each particular Pagan  critique  topic  can  only  be  established  through  the  careful  study  of  each of  the  treatiseís  related  passages,  in  this  talk,  I  shall  argue  that,  with  respect  to  the question  of  the  cult  of  divine  statues,  Makariosí opponent  is  Porphyry  of  Tyre.  Furthermore,   on   my   suggested   reading,  in   his   response,   Makarios   defends   his  views   against   Porphyry   by   appropriating   and   adapting   ideas   of   Iamblichan  origin.  In  so  doing,  he  exploits  the  controversy  between  Porphyry  and  his  own pupil  Iamblichus  to  refute  the  former.
